Take a peek behind the façade of Lidl’s custom-made warehouse

This year, Lidl moved its logistics centre in Breda a little further away to a new warehouse on the former site of The Greenery. The German supermarket chain leases the warehouse (over 58,000 m² in total) from WDP, which redeveloped the entire logistics estate. Patrick Marczinski, project manager for warehouse management at Lidl, gives you a peek behind the scenes.

From Breda to Europe

Patrick Marczinski: “Lidl continues to grow strongly, so we want to increase our capacity. Locating the new DC in Breda was a logical choice. After all, most containers arrive in the nearby Port of Rotterdam. And just like in the former warehouse, the new DC is for the storage and distribution of our goods for Germany and Austria.”

From 58,000 m² to 85,000 m²

WDP’s new DC for Lidl now occupies no less than 58,000 m² of the 85,000 m² modern logistics estate. “Our site will be expanding another 4,000 m² by May 2020. A further expansion of over 20,000 m² will follow in the next couple of years. As soon as it’s all operational, we can expand the distribution of our goods from Breda to other European countries.”

Built-to-suit DC

WDP also built this warehouse according to the customer’s specifications. “The new DC has special loading gates, an easy-to-maintain floor that does not crack, plenty of daylight for a pleasant working atmosphere, and other special features. WDP brainstormed with us on each of these wishes and sought the best possible solution.”
